Hybrid Crossover Work

Everyone has a rung on the ladder where the long irons stop paying rent. This session finds yours and builds the club that takes over.

The crossover is personal, not a rule

There is no universal club number where irons become hybrids. We have fitted a strong player whose crossover sat at the three iron and a slower-swinging retiree whose crossover sat at the six. What determines it is not swing speed alone but how much height you can generate at that head mass, and whether the ball still stops when it lands.

So the test here is a stopping test, not a distance test. We look at descent behaviour and at how wide the dispersion goes when the strike drifts a groove low. The rung where the iron stops holding a green is the rung where the hybrid earns the slot — even if the iron still carries further on a pure strike.

Hybrids need geometry too, and rarely get it

Because hybrids arrive as a single stock spec, most players never have theirs checked. Yet a hybrid has a sole that interacts with turf, a lie angle that sets the face direction, and a length that determines your posture — all the same considerations we apply to an iron. A stock hybrid that sits two degrees upright will send a good swing left, and the player will assume they are simply bad with hybrids.

If you own a hybrid you have never trusted, bring it. Roughly a third of the time it is not the wrong club, it is the right club sitting at the wrong angle.

Matching the replacement to the neighbours

A hybrid that flies eleven yards further than the iron above it has not fixed a gap, it has moved one. Once we know which rung is changing, the build gets set so the new club slots between its neighbours by carry, not by loft on the sole. At Salt Lake altitude those two things separate more than they do lower down, so we work from measured carry every time.

The shaft question

Hybrids are often sold with a shaft closer to a fairway wood than to the irons around them. That is fine if the club is being used as a small fairway wood off the deck; it is a problem if you want it to feel like the six iron you just hit. We build both ways depending on which job you want the club to do, and the choice is made deliberately rather than inherited from a stock offering.

Three ways a crossover goes wrong

A

Bought by loft alone

A 19-degree hybrid is not automatically a 3-iron replacement. Hybrid heads launch higher at the same loft, so matching numbers on the sole usually overlaps a slot.

Too many at once

Replacing three long irons with three hybrids often produces three clubs that fly within twelve yards of each other. Two, gapped properly, cover more ground.

Never checked on a board

Stock hybrid lie angles skew upright relative to the irons they replace. The left miss that follows gets blamed on the club type rather than the angle.
