Junior SizingWhat Actually Happens When You Cut Down a Parent's Irons
It is the cheapest way to put a club in a child's hands and it is frequently the right answer. It also changes four specifications at once, and only one of them is length.
A parent arrives with a seven iron, a hacksaw story and a nine-year-old. The plan is to take four inches off and hand it over. We are broadly in favour of this plan, which surprises people who expect a fitting shop to talk them into a junior set. Cut-down adult irons have started more golfers in this valley than any boxed product has.
But the club that comes out the other end is not simply a shorter version of the club that went in. Four things move when you cut a shaft, and three of them move in a direction that makes the club harder for a small player to use.
One: the length, which is the point
This is the change you wanted and the only one that is straightforwardly good. A club a child can actually stand to is a club they can swing on a repeatable plane rather than manoeuvre around their body. If the current club is four inches too long, the child is compensating on every single swing, and the compensation is being learned as technique.
The right length is not guesswork. It comes from wrist-to-floor and gets confirmed by watching them address a ball. A child holding a properly sized club looks unremarkable, which is the entire goal.
Two: the swingweight, which collapses
Cut an inch off an iron and you lose roughly six swingweight points. Cut four inches and the club goes from something like D0 to something in the low B range, which is far below anything sold commercially. What that feels like in a child's hands is a stick with nothing on the end of it: they cannot feel where the head is, so they cannot time when it arrives.
The counterintuitive result is that a heavily shortened adult club often feels harder to swing than the original, despite weighing less. Children respond by hitting at the ball rather than swinging through it, because there is no head mass giving them feedback about where the club is.
The single most useful thing you can do to a cut-down junior club costs about four dollars: put weight back in the head until the child can feel it.
On the bench that means tip weights inside the shaft, or lead tape on the back of the head, or both, brought up until the swingweight lands somewhere a small player can sense. There is no universal target number for juniors and we do not pretend there is. We put weight in, hand it over, and watch. The child tells you when it is right, usually by suddenly making a full finish.
Three: the effective lie, which goes flat
Shorter club, same body, hands closer to the ground: the club now sits more toe-down than it did. Roughly a degree of effective lie per half inch removed, which means a four-inch cut takes the club something like eight degrees flat relative to how it was set up.
Except the child is also much shorter than the adult, which pushes the requirement the other way. The two effects partially cancel and the amount of cancellation depends entirely on the child's proportions, so this is genuinely a case where you have to put tape on the sole and look rather than calculate.
We do this on the board with the child hitting off it. Most cut-down sets we see need one to three degrees of correction somewhere, and it is not always in the same direction across the set.
Four: the shaft, which stiffens
Removing material from the butt end of a shaft raises its frequency and makes it play stiffer. Take four inches off an adult regular-flex steel shaft and you are somewhere north of stiff, in a club now being swung at perhaps half the speed it was designed for.
This is the limit that decides whether a cut-down is worth doing at all. A lightweight steel or graphite adult shaft in regular flex can survive a two or three inch cut and remain usable. A stiff, heavy tour-weight shaft cut down four inches is a fence post, and no amount of head weight rescues it. When we see that combination we say so, and the honest recommendation is a second-hand junior set instead.
The total mass problem underneath all of it
Cutting length removes some grams but the head keeps every one of its. A modern cavity iron head weighs around 270 grams whether it is on a 38 inch club or a 32 inch one, and for a small child that head is a substantial fraction of what they can control.
This is why the very smallest players are better served by purpose-built junior clubs with light heads and light shafts, even though the adult chassis could technically be cut to length. Somewhere around age nine or ten, depending on the child, adult heads stop being too heavy and the cut-down route opens up properly.
What we actually do with one on the bench
- Measure the child properly first, so the target length is a number rather than a guess
- Check the shaft weight and flex before cutting anything, because that decides go or no-go
- Cut from the butt, never the tip, and cut once
- Rebuild the head mass until the child can feel the club
- Fit a grip sized to their hand rather than whatever was on it
- Tape the sole and read it on the board, then bend to what the tape shows
- Write the whole thing down, including how much length is left for the next growth spurt
That last line is the one parents value most. A cut-down club can usually be extended again later, and knowing in advance how far it can travel turns a hand-me-down into a plan rather than a stopgap.
