Junior SizingThe Point Where a Junior Club Runs Out of Adjustment
Stretching a growing player's clubs is the cheap route and it works for a while. Four separate limits decide when it stops working, and they do not arrive together.
A parent who has been through one growth spurt already understands the arithmetic. New sets every eighteen months are expensive, and extending the existing clubs costs twelve dollars each plus rebalancing. So the sensible plan is to stretch what you have for as long as it can be stretched.
The question we get asked, usually with a hopeful expression, is how long that is. The honest answer is that four different things run out at four different times, and the first one to run out decides.
Limit one: the shaft has nothing left to give
An extension is a plug inserted into the butt of the shaft with a section of new material on top. It works, it is strong when done properly, and it has a ceiling. Past about an inch and a half on a steel junior shaft, the joint sits far enough down that the club starts to feel different in the hands, and past two inches most builders stop regardless of what the joint can physically survive.
Graphite is less tolerant still, because the extension has to grip the inside of a tapered composite tube and the wall thickness varies. We will do an inch and a half in graphite and we are cautious past that.
So the first ceiling is roughly two inches, cumulative across the life of the club. A club already extended an inch has an inch left, not two.
Extensions are cumulative. Every session we write on the sheet how much of the allowance has been used, so nobody has to guess two years later.
Limit two: the shaft is now far too soft
Every inch added lowers the shaft's frequency and makes it play softer, at the same time as the child is getting stronger and faster. Those two effects compound in the wrong direction.
A junior shaft that suited a nine-year-old at twenty-eight inches is a wet noodle for the same child at eleven, three inches longer and twenty percent faster. Ball flight goes high and left, dispersion widens, and the player starts steering it. Length is the visible thing that changed but stiffness is the thing that broke.
This limit usually arrives before the physical extension ceiling does, and it is the most common genuine reason to replace rather than stretch.
Limit three: the head weight is now wrong in the other direction
Adding length adds swingweight, roughly three points per half inch. A club extended an inch and a half gains about nine points, which takes a junior head from something a child can feel to something that drags. Head weight can be removed to compensate, but a junior head is light to begin with and there is not much to take out.
At the same time the total mass has barely moved, so the club now feels head-heavy and unstable rather than heavier overall. Children respond by shortening their backswing, which reads as a technique problem to anybody watching from the range fence.
Limit four: the lie angle cannot reach
Length and lie move together. Every half inch added makes the club play about a degree more upright, so an inch and a half of extension needs roughly three degrees of flattening just to hold station, before accounting for the fact that the child has also grown and needs a different lie in absolute terms.
Junior heads are frequently cast, and cast heads have limited bending range. Two degrees is usually safe, three is a conversation, four is where we start refusing on some heads because the hosel will crack. When the arithmetic asks for more than the head can deliver, the chassis is finished regardless of how the shaft is doing.
The order they usually arrive in
For a typical junior set that gets used hard, stiffness runs out first, lie range second, swingweight third and the physical extension ceiling last. That order is not universal and it depends heavily on what the set was built from, which is why we measure rather than predict.
The practical consequence is that a set can be physically extendable and still finished. We have turned down extension work on clubs with a full inch of allowance left because the shaft was already too soft for the player, and doing the work would have made a bad club worse for twelve dollars a time.
Buying a set that stretches further
If you are buying anyway, a few choices extend the useful life considerably.
- Buy at the child's current length, not a size up. A club that is too long teaches a compensation and cannot be un-taught later
- Prefer steel over graphite in the junior range where the child can handle the weight, because it extends more predictably
- Ask about the head material before buying; a forged or bendable cast head gives you a degree or two more room
- A shorter set of five or six clubs, properly fitted, beats a full set of twelve at the wrong specification
- Keep the build sheet, so the next fitter knows exactly what has already been used up
What a session produces
A junior or family session ends with a written plan rather than just a set of adjusted clubs. On it: what was changed today, how much extension allowance is left in each club, how much bending range is left in each head, and roughly when to come back. The revisit interval is usually eight to fourteen months depending on where the child is in their growth curve, and we would rather see them early and send them away than late.
